Include

Stroke order pages follow the practice pages and are included automatically when you tick Recall test.

What is on the sheet

Each character has a line showing its pinyin, its first English meaning from the Chinese Boost dictionary and its stroke count. For a character from a word, the line also shows the word, its pinyin and its meaning. The reading used in that word comes first, followed by any other readings. For example, 行 in 银行 yínháng (bank) shows háng first.

With Stroke order selected, the strokes appear one at a time in writing order. Earlier strokes are grey and the new stroke is black. Below them are practice squares with a black model, pale copies to trace and empty squares to write in. You can choose how many tracing copies to include.

The optional stroke order pages provide a reference after the practice pages. Each character is shown large in grey, with a thin black arrow inside each stroke showing its direction and a number marking its start. Characters with more than 10 strokes get a larger square. Pinyin and the stroke count appear below each character.

Printing at the right size

Square sizes are measured on paper. Choose from 10 to 24 mm in 2 mm steps, with one to four rows per character.

Select Print or save as PDF to open your browser’s print dialog. Choose the same paper size as the sheet and set the scale to 100% or “Actual size”. To save a PDF, choose “Save as PDF” in the print dialog.

Recall tests

Select Recall test to show each character’s pinyin and meaning above empty squares. This removes the model, tracing copies and stroke order. The characters appear only on the stroke order pages. For a character from a word, the sheet shows the word with a gap, such as 银_ for 行.

Choose Shuffled to mix the order. The link keeps that order each time you print. Select Shuffle again to create a new version. Shuffled sheets have a version code in the footer.

Where the stroke order comes from

The stroke outlines come from Make Me a Hanzi, the same source used for stroke order animations on Chinese Boost dictionary pages. Characters without outlines use a font and have no stroke order row.
