Choose your characters

Type or paste Chinese text, or choose characters from a List or HSK band. Sign in to use your saved words. Each worksheet includes up to 40 pairs. Pairs stay in their original order unless you choose Shuffled under More settings.

The generator pairs characters by shape using Chinese Boost’s hand-checked list of look-alike characters (形近字). Characters without a pair are left out. The status message lists them.

Choose the character

Each row has two sentences, one for each character in the pair. The sentences sit side by side. A box in each gap shows both characters. Circle the character that fits. The pinyin and English translation appear below each sentence.

Which is which

Each pair comes with a reading and meaning for each character. Write the matching character in each square.

Answer key

The answer key has its own pages. It lists the answers, then gives a note on how to tell each pair apart. The notes come from the look-alike list.

Sentence sources

Sentences come from the Chinese Boost 例句 library. Each gap has one right answer. A sentence is only used if the other character would make a word absent from the Chinese Boost dictionary.

For example, 他已经走了 tests 已. The other choice would give 己经, which is not in the dictionary.

Choose A4 or US Letter. Use your browser’s print dialogue to print the worksheet or save it as a PDF. Match the paper size to your worksheet and set the scale to 100%.
