Choose your sentences

Choose a published List or an HSK band. Sign in to use your own Lists or saved sentences. Every sentence appears with a checkbox, all ticked at first. Untick any you want to leave out. Use More settings to limit sentences to 8, 12 or 16 characters. Each ticked sentence is used once across the selected exercises. Sets of more than 50 sentences are split into parts of up to 50.

Fill the gaps

Each sentence has one word missing. For sentences from a List, it is one of that List’s words where possible. The missing words appear in a box above each group of five sentences. Write each word in the squares, one character per square. The English below each sentence gives its meaning.

Put the words in order

The words of each sentence are mixed up. Put them in order and write the sentence in the squares below, one character in each. The English gives the meaning.

Write the characters

Each sentence has pinyin and an English translation. Write the sentence in Chinese characters, one in each square. Each pinyin syllable matches one character, and each sentence has one correct answer. For characters with several readings, the pinyin uses the dictionary reading that fits the sentence.

Translate

This exercise is optional and off by default. Tick it under Include to add it to your worksheet. Each English sentence comes with a Chinese word to use. Write your translation on the ruled line. Several translations may be correct, so the answer key gives a model translation to help a teacher mark the work.

Answer key

The answer key is on separate pages, so you can keep it for marking. It shows each sentence in Chinese with pinyin, and underlines the missing or given word. Some sentences have other correct word orders, and translations vary. The key gives one correct answer for word order and a model answer for translation.

Where the sentences come from

Every sentence, pinyin reading and English translation comes from the 例句 library. The dictionary shows the same sentences.
