What is on the sheet

Make a free worksheet with up to 300 words. Type or paste Chinese text, choose a published List or HSK band, or use your saved words. You only need an account for saved words. Words stay in the order you give them.

Tone marks, Characters to pinyin and Answer key are ticked by default. You can tick or untick any part. Each part starts on a new page.

Tone marks. 银行 appears as yin2 hang2 with its English meaning. Write it as yínháng. A 5 means the neutral tone. For example, 谢谢 appears as xie4 xie5. Write it as xièxie, with no mark on the neutral syllable.

Characters to pinyin. Each word appears in characters with its English meaning. Write its pinyin with tone marks on four-line paper.

Pinyin to characters. Each word appears in pinyin with its English meaning. Write one character in each square.

Pinyin writing paper adds one blank page of four-line paper (四线三格). The third line is darker because letters sit on it.

Answer key shows each word’s characters and pinyin. Each word has the same number in every exercise part, so one key covers all parts. Each answer links to its dictionary entry. You can use these links in a saved PDF.

Where the answers come from

Readings, tone marks and tone numbers come from each word’s entry in the Chinese Boost dictionary. For example, 行 is háng in 银行 and xíng in 旅行.

If you type a single character on its own, the exercise uses the first reading in its dictionary entry. The answer key also lists its other readings.

Text without spaces is looked up as a whole word first. If it is not a dictionary word, each character is looked up separately. Words and characters missing from the dictionary are left out. The status line names them.
